An original American breed, the Maine Coon is an indigenous breed
of cat originating in the state of Maine. Popular folklore suggests
that the Maine Coon is a cross between a domestic cat and a raccoon,
and the Maine Coon's appearance would certainly support this claim.
However, since it's scientifically impossible for two different
species to mate and reproduce, a more plausible explanation for the
Maine Coon's glorious fluffyness is that a domestic cat mated with
an Angora cat, possibly brought to Maine from overseas centuries
ago.
However this unique breed came to be, the fact remains that Maine
Coon is a distinct cat breed recognized by cat fanciers throughout
the world.
Maine Coon cats are of medium to large size, and muscular, lithe,
well-proportioned and athletic. They have a thick, shaggy coat that
varies in length over the body; longer on the legs and stomach, and
shorter around the shoulders and front legs. The Maine Coon has a
beautiful, fluffy ruff, and it's true crowning glory is it's long,
thickly plumed tail, which it carries high and with pride. The Maine
Coon also has tufted ears, giving the cat a slightly wild Lynx-like
look.
Maine Coons come in an array of colors including parti-colors and
tortoise colors. In competition, pointed patterns are not accepted.
Maine Coon cats can grow to an awe inspiring size; males can grow as
large as 25 pounds, while females are a little smaller. They take
about 3 years to reach full maturity and size.
Nicknamed the "Gentle Giant", the Maine Coon has a delightfully
sweet personality. No wonder the Maine Coon hold's it's own as
America's second most popular cat breed! Maine Coons get along well
with children, other pets, dogs and elderly people, making them a
good choice for almost any home.
Maine Coon Cat Prices:
